The questions posed on the header here are those which you need to consider before you take the step into Freemasonry.
Are you a man over 18? Every organisation will have its restrictions and rules. Freemasonry has always been a male organisation. While female and mixed lodges exist around the world, Queensland Freemasonry has always followed the male only rule as do most of the other jurisdictions in Australia and overseas. This is not to make comment about how those organisations which allow women into their ranks but simply state that the females are simply not admitted into our society, in much the same way that Zonta does not allow males into theirs. Women’s organisations are catered for under the Masonic umbrella however. There is also an age requirement to join Freemasonry. Masonry is a lifelong calling for most people. The decision to join is rightly left until a man reaches the age of majority when such decisions can be made without the pitfalls of youth.
Are you a good person? Masonry seeks to protect itself by allowing only those men to join who are of good character. You will be required to provide character references. It would be difficult for any organisation to even exist let alone espouse such lofty ideals if it knowingly concealed murderers and rapists among its members. Of course it would be nonsense to suggest that such people have never been a member of our society. But it would also be reasonable to assert that members who have broken the laws of society do not remain members once discovered.
Do you believe in a superior being? Freemasonry does not seek to impose a belief system on you. You do not need to be a practicing anything. It does not inquire about your particular vision of your God. It seeks only to assure itself that you believe in that superior being. From a purely logical point of view, does it not follow that anyone who believes in such a superior being would by nature be a good person? In fact it would probably be just the type of person Freemasonry is looking for. The question for you is, are you looking for Freemasonry.
